Advanced Functional Biomedical MaterialsResearch Center (AFBM)


The Advanced Functional Biomedical MaterialsResearch Center (AFBM), which affiliated with College of Materials Science and Engineering, Beijing University of Chemical Technology, was founded by Prof. Fu-Jian XU in 2009. AFBM is one of the key members of State Key Laboratory of Chemical Resource Engineering and Beijing Laboratory of Biomedical Materials. The research interestsof AFBM focus on high-performance gene/drug delivery systems, organic/inorganic hybrid multifunctional nanomaterials, visualized biosensors for disease diagnosis, and surface modification of biomedical materials, etc. The research team of AFBM is comprised ofoneChang Jiang Scholar Distinguished Professor, 2 associate professors, 2 assistant professors, 1postdoctoral fellow, 4 doctoral students and 19 master students.

AFBM aims to improve the healthcare and life quality of thenation by intensive studies in both fundamentalscience and applied technologies, which are based on the interdisciplinary researches of materials science, chemistry, biomedicine, etc. To this end, numerous papers with international reputation have been published, andinnovativehighleveltalentshave been cultivated in the group. These efforts are helpful to enhanceboth domestic and international influence of our university in the field of biomedical materials.

AFBM owns cutting-edge research facilities, including200 m2laboratoriesequipped with state-of-art instruments such as atomic force microscope (AFM),thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA), dynamic light scatter (DLS),gel permeation chromatography (GPC), high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), preparative liquid chromatography,infrared spectrometer, UV-vis spectrometer,and zeta-sizer/zeta-potential,etc.Since 2009, more than 100 papers have been published, among which more than 70 papers were published in well-recognized journals with IF>4.0. Besides, we published three reviews in Progress in Polymer Science(IF=26.8) and Chemical Society Reviews(IF=30.4).Up to now, we have accomplished more than ten national and ministerial/provincial-level projects, including projects of National Natural Science Foundation of China, key projects of Natural Science Foundation of Beijing, etc. Moreover, we are in good cooperation with Anzhen Hospital, Tiantan Hospital, Cancer Hospital Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, Jishuitan Hospital, etc., which paves the wayfor the transition from fundamental researches to clinical applications.

We warmly welcome the universities, institutes, and enterprises fromdomestic and overseas in the field of biomedical materials forcooperation and academic exchange program.




XU Fujian (Professor, PhD)

Prof. Xu did his undergraduate in East China University of Science and Technology and postgraduate in Institute of process engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences. After his graduation in 2002, he pursued his study as a PhD student in the Pennsylvania State University and received the honor in 2006. He then worked as postdoctoral fellow in National University of Singapore and awarded as Lee Kuan Yew Postdoctoral Fellow in 2007. Now, he is the vice dean of College of Materials Science and Engineering, Beijing University of Chemical Technology and the executive director of Beijing Laboratory of Biomedical Materials. He haspublished over 100 research papers and received over 2000 citations. He is the recipient of Program for New Century Excellent Talents in University (NCET, 2009), Distinguished Young Scholars Award (NSFC, 2013) and Chang Jiang Professor Award (Ministry of Education of China, 2014)


ZHAO Nana (Associated Professor, PhD)

Dr. Zhao got her bachelor degree from Shandong University in 2003 and then she graduated from Peking University in 2008 with a PhD degree. After that, she moved to Canada and worked as a postdoctoral research fellow in University of Toronto. After 2 years, she joined Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in US. In 2012, she went back to China and worked as an associated professor in AFBM. Her research interests including self-assembling materials, organic/inorganic hybrid multifunctional nanomaterials. She has co-authored over 30 peer reviewed research papers in top journals including Chem. Soc. Rev.,Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., Nano Lett.and Adv. Mater.with over 800 citations.


DINGXiaokang (Associated Professor, PhD)

Dr. Ding was graduated from University of Science and Technology Beijing for both bachelor and master degree. Then, he started his PhD study in National University of Singapore (NUS) and graduated in 2013. He kept on his work as a postdoctoral research fellow in NUS before he joined AFBM in 2014. He work focused on biological and chemical nano-sensors, interface biological molecules and surface chemistry and produced into many research papers in Anal. Chem.,Biosens. Bioelectron, Sens. Actuators, B, etc.


YU Bingran (Assistant Professor, PhD)

Dr. Yu received both bachelor and PhD degree from LanZhou University. He joined AFBM in 2013 and his research interests related to functional bio-macromolecular contrast agents, multi-functional gene vectors with drug loading and modified with polypeptide or targeting molecules. He has co-authored over 20 papers in NPG Asia Mater, ActaBiomater, ACS Appl Mater Inter, Nanoscale, Chem. Comn. andChem. Eur. J. etc.


LI Yang (Assistant Professor, PhD)

Dr. Li received his PhD from University of New South Wales, Australia in 2014. He then joined ARC Centre of Excellence in Convergent Bio-Nano Science and Technology in Monash University as a research fellow. He is a member of Royal Australian Chemical Institute and has participated in many ARC discovery projects in Australia. He has co-authored over 10 articles published in high impact journals, such as AngewandteChemie International Edition, Advanced Healthcare Materials, and Macromolecules, etc. He joined AFBM in 2015 and his research interests including radical polymerization, hydrogels for medical applications, multifunctional bio-nano carriers forimmune factorsand novel-materials for immune responses.


DUAN Shun (Postdoctoral research fellow, PhD)

Dr.Duan finished his undergraduate study in Qingdao University of Science and Technology in 2006 and then he joined Beijing University of Chemical Technology for PhD study. He got his PhD in 2014 and then worked as postdoctoral research fellow in AFBM. His work focus on 3D printing, macromolecular materials and bio-materials for tissue engineering. Hehas over 20 research paper published including several top journals such as NPG Asia Mater, ACS Appl Mater Inter, Nanoscale, J. Biomed. Mater. Res A and Carbon, etc.


DU Jie (Guest Professor, Anzhen Hospital)

Dr, Du is the vice president of the cardiovascular research institute of Beijing, Anzhen hospital. He is also the director of Key Laboratory of Remodeling-related Cardiovascular Diseases, Ministry of Education. He was honored as Distinguished Young Scholars as well as Chang Jiang Professor Award. In addition, he is one of the sea poly project of Beijing overseas talents. He has made progress achievement in exploring the mechanism of cardiovascular diseases. His research provided huge benefits for cardiovascular diagnosis and treatment. He also founded a cardiovascular research community with peers and their efforts have already tuned into over 100 SCI research papers.


MA Jie (Guest Professor, Cancer Hospital)

Dr. Ma is a research fellow from State Key Laboratory of Molecular Oncology Cancer Institute,Cancer Hospital Peking Union Medical College Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences. She is also a member of American Cancer Society and the distinguish experts coming to China. She is the chief of international communication department of cancer hospital and a member of Beijing immunology council. She is one of the editorial board member of Oncology Progress, whilst she has already published over 50 research papers in top journals such as Small and Clin. Cancer Res. etc.


LIU Fusheng (Guest Professor, Tiantan Hospital)

Dr. Liu is the director of Beijing neurosurgery institute for brain tumor research center and he is also one of the member of Beijing Laboratory of Biomedical Materials committee. He is the team leader ofneurosurgery team of Beijing health council. He has participated in 7 NSFC projects (Natural Science Foundation of China), 1 863-project and 10 provincial projects. And he received over 10 million RMB founding and has over 100 research paper published. He has been honored as second prize of National Prize for Progress in Science and Technology and many provincial Prize for Progress in Science and Technology.
