Prof. Meizhen Yin’s team published research paper in JACS

Recently, Prof. Yin’s team published research paper titled “Green-Light-Triggered Phase Transition of Azobenzene Derivatives toward Reversible Adhesives” in Journal of the American Chemical Society.

Adhesives are of immense practical and technological importance. While bioinspired and micropatterned adhesives have been introduced, reversible adhesion is still difficult to achieve. The authors reported the phase transitions of a series of AZOs were photothermally triggered by green light to obtain reversible adhesives. Prof. Yin’s team has previously reported on other types of photothermal materials, published in Nat. Commun. 2019, 10, 767; Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2019, 58, 1638; Sci. Bull. 2018, 63, 101; ACS Nano 2017, 11, 3797, etc.

Zhen Wu, doctoral student, is the first author of the paper; Prof. Meizhen Yin is the corresponding author. Beijing University of Chemical Technology is the first research institution. This work was financially supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Fundamental Research Funds for the Central Universities and Research projects on biomedical transformation of China-Japan Friendship Hospital.

Significance of this research work: The authors have developed a facile and efficient method to prepare a highly reversible and strong adhesive. The study opens up an avenue for reversible phase transitions of organic compounds through light irradiation and thus holds enormous promise for complex adhesive applications.
