Introduction

The College of Materials Science and Engineering (CMSE) is one of the departments founded when our university was established in 1958. After more than half a century of construction and development, it has achieved in distinct discipline characteristic, tremendous school-running strength, and significant academic achievements. Also it has become one of the important bases of talent training, scientific research, and social service in materials science and engineering. 

 

The college is composed of 8 departments, 1 center and 1 institute, and has set up 1 national key discipline in materials science, 1 cultivated national key discipline in polymer chemistry and physics, 1 Beijing key discipline in materials science and engineering. It has built 2 national key laboratories with the relevant colleges, 1 National technological research Center with Jilin petrochemical Co. It has also independently built 1 Beijing laboratory, 1 key laboratory of the ministry of education, 1 engineering research center of the ministry of education, 1 high school discipline innovation base, 2 key laboratories of Beijing, 2 municipal engineering technology research center of Beijing, and 1 industrial technology research center.

 

The college has paid lots of attention to the adjustment and improvement of the whole staff-structure, to establish a high level of teaching faculty & staff. There are 184 faculties & staffs, 126 persons holding senior academic title, including 1 Distinguished Expert of Thousand Talents program, 4 Chair Professors of Yangtze River Scholars Program, 1 Lecture Professor of Yangtze River Scholars Program, 7 Distinguished Young Scholars Supported by National Natural Science Funds, 1 Excellent Youth Scholars Supported by National Natural Science Funds. 2 “973” Project Chief Scientists, 22 winners of Education Ministry's New Century Excellent Talents Supporting Plan, 2 Innovation Teams of the Ministry of Education, 1 National Defense Science and Technology Innovation team.

 

The college receives training comprehensive quality talents for the school-running idea. In order to cultivate senior engineers and research personnel with innovative ability, the curriculum in CMSE is trying to achieve balances between the key principles and wide range of knowledge and between science, engineering, and arts. It has achieved fruitful results: polymer materials and engineering, materials science and engineering are national characteristic specialties, biological functional materials is Beijing characteristic specialty. There are lots of outstanding professors, including 1 winner of the national distinguished teacher reward, 2 winner of Beijing distinguished teacher reward, 1 state-level teaching team. It has 1 National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center in Polymer science and Engineering, 4 National Quality Courses and 4 National-level excellent resource sharing courses.

 

In scientific research, technological innovation, and social service, we have made outstanding achievements and undertook many national major and key research projects, developed the close relationships and cooperation with domestic and foreign large- and medium-sized enterprises and research institutions, have obtained high-level achievements in scientific research, and found wide spread applications of scientific and technological achievements. In the past five years, CMSE has received many government awards, including 4 National Technology & Invention Awards and 20 Provincial and Ministerial Science or Technology Awards, and has accomplished over 340 national and province level projects, including 2 Chief units of “973” Project, 1 innovation research group project of NSFC, 7 Major Programs of NSFC, 2 Projects of International Cooperation and Exchanges of NSFC, 3 National Natural Science Funds for Distinguished Young Scholars of NSFC, 15 National Key Technology Support Programs, etc. In the meantime, CMSE has undertaken more than 800 by various foundations and companies for developing new products or making scientific and technological innovation. The total research grants of CMSE amounts to about 740 million RMB per year.

 

CMSE carries out the extensive and productive communication and collaboration with international famous universities, enterprises and organizations, to create a multi-cultural environment for cultivating innovative talents. It has established a close academic and scientific research collaboration with many international famous universities, such as the State University of New York, University of Akron, Case Western Reserve university, University of Loughborough, Tokyo Institute of Technology, Shinshu University, Mendeleev Chemical University, University of Seoul, Chungnam National University, University of New South Wales, Australia's Institute of Scientific and Industrial Research. For international collaboration in education of undergraduates, the "3+1+1" joint programs have been established by CMSE with University of Loughborough, University of Akron, and Case Western Reserve University,2+2” joint programs with University of Birmingham, and University of Glasgow and so on.Agreements have also been made with some university such as the University of Nagoya on the joint training programs for the postgraduates at CMSE. Each year, over 50 guests from abroad are invited to pay a visit to CMSE. Most of them are professors from famous universities and high-level managers of international corporations. CMSE also organizes 1 or 2 international and domestic conferences annually. All of these efforts have greatly enhanced the international outreach and collaboration of CMSE.
